Hourglass Modernist Eyeshadow Palette Review

Monday 16 February 2015

Okay Hourglass, you have some explaining to do. When the 'Modernist' eye shadow palettes were released to Barney's, they were clearly marketed as a Barney's exclusive, and limited edition. Now I don't know if the limited edition part is correct or not, but these palettes are available everywhere now, including Net-a-Porter!

They retail for $71 and there are now over 5 different palettes, when they first came onto the market there was only this one palette, that I've got. It is called infinity and houses a mix of cool and warm tone shadows which is good, and they are a bit darker which is perfect for a night time look! Although you can definitely create a day time appropriate look with the palette as well, but overall I would say this palette is targeted more towards a darker look. I will be posting both looks on my Instagram (@livvbeautyy) in the next few days.

Pros: You can tell by the swatches the eyeshadows are nice and pigmented. They are also one of the creamiest powder eyeshadows I have swatched! They feel very buttery under my fingers and they blend so well. Then there of course is the packaging, which is very luxurious and well made. I think Hourglass as a brand is quite luxurious, it has a different feel compared to say Chanel. But nonetheless, still a good quality high end brand.

Cons: This thing is tiny. Like really tiny. I was expecting it to be the same size as their 'Ambient Blush' and 'Ambient Lighting' palette, which it isn't.

As you can by the side by side comparison it is significantly smaller than their original palettes. If you want to get more technical, the net weight of the blush palette is 0.116oz compared to they eyeshadow palette which is 0.035oz. In grams that is 3.288g compared to 0.992g. This means the eyeshadows are literally one third the size of the blush product! Yet they are basically the same price (like $6 difference but whose counting?).

The only other thing I can nit pick about this palette as I did notice on first swatch there was a little bit of a powder kick up. This didn't happen when I was using them with a brush on my eyes but they definitely are a more powder-ey eyeshadow, which was a bit surprising considering when you feel them they are so buttery and creamy.

Overall I am happy I bought it and to be honest I will probably buy a few more off Net-a-Porter once I save a bit (I am so behind on my savings it is ridiculous that I am still buying makeup!)
