I have been lucky enough to work with a lot of amazing people from different PR agencies and companies, and recently a few bigger companies have been in contact with me, and asking for my media kit. I had no clue what a media kit was, or what it was even meant to look like. So, as any young adult would do, I googled it. I was overwhelmed with the amount of websites claiming to have the 'perfect' layout for a media kit, and after sifting through many of them I got a feel of what should and shouldn't be included in one.
Since I own a MacBook Pro, I made mine in a program called Pages. It is similar to Word and Publisher combined into one, and I created my media kit on a 'poster' layout.
This is how I decided to lay mine out, it has clear and bright photos. I decided on using three major brands I work with as the photos, and you can always update these as you work with different companies. I love bright colours, plus a mix of black and white, which is portrayed in my media kit. Let this kit be a reflection of you, if, for example, your Instagram has a black and white theme, maybe your media kit could show this in a simple theme with black and white photos. Again, that's just a suggestion. You can really go to town on this thing!
There are 3 major writing parts that I think need to be included in your media kit, you can split them up smaller or join them together for a bigger part but I am breaking down today in 3 parts to make it as clear as possible for you.
First, the introduction:
- Name, age and location
- What is your blog about?
- Other hobbies
- Why did you start blogging/making videos etc
- What is your personality like?
- Any other facts or information you want prospective companies to know about you or your media outlet
Second, the statistics:
- Page views/video views per year
- Page views/video views per month on average
- Daily or monthly unique visits
- What countries are your major audience?
- If you are based on Instagram or YouTube, how many follows/subscribers have you got?
- How long have you been around?
- Do you have an uploading schedule?
- Average Instagram likes (personally I would only include this if you are only based on Instagram)
- when you last updated the statistics, THIS IS A MUST! I am planning on updating mine monthly, and I simply write below all the statistics *last updated March 2015*
Lastly, where can they find you:
- Instagram or Twitter account
- YouTube name
- Blog link (don't put (for example) livv beautyy, write the whole thing livvbeautyy.blogspot.com)
- Email address
- PO Box if you have one, I wouldn't include your home address until after the company has decided to work with you
- Blog lovin' or any other media sites you are associated with
These are the basics of what should be written in your media kit. You can add or leave things out from my list to tailor it to your own document.
Now for pictures, as I mentioned earlier I included three pictures. Each was a group of products from brands I have previously worked with. If your face is a part of your branding, such as a makeup artist or YouTube channel, you might want to include a photo of yourself, or of your work if you are a make-up artist.
Bright colours and photos are always eye catching and visually appealing, so I photographed the makeup products on a white background and adjusted the brightness in iPhoto.
One last thing I think is very important, is to export your finished media kit into PDF form. This way it will be viewed the same no matter what computer or device it is looked at, and is just easier for companies to manage.
I hope this helps at least one person who is wondering how to write a media kit! If I have left anything out or if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
